Fashion Flashback through decades 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s

1960s fashion for women was mainly based on style and attitude. Jackie Kennedy was one of the first fashion icons of the time. Her style included white pearls and tailored suit dresses. It was clean, simple and well fitted, with perfectly matched accessories. She wore dresses without collars; jackets buttoned only with one large top button and low heel shoes. Many women in the USA and abroad copied her style. After her husband’s assassination, Jackie was no longer in the public eye and Brigitte Bardot was the new 60s fashion icon to be inspired by. However, her style was Jackie’s opposite, while Jackie was simple and modest, Brigitte was showy, flashy, and cheap. When she wore her gingham wedding dress with white lace trim lace quickly became the new fashion trend. Mary Quant was another 1960s fashion influence. Her style was different from “grown up fashion”, it was more playful and funny to “youth fashion". Her skirts and dresses were very short; her prints were colorful and fun. Both her fashion and her personality influenced the rest of the 60s as “fashion-is-fun. ”The main idea was a return to youth that made most fashion trends in the 60s. Oversize collars, bows, pastels, and polka dots were all dress details that made women look like little girl’s dolls, more innocent. Colors and prints were inspired by the pop art and modern art movements. The jumper dress was another Mary Quant creation that reflected the youthful, playful style of 1960s fashion. That style made a women look much younger. Anything above the knee was a “mini skirt.” How short a woman’s dress or skirt was a sign of her self-confidence.

1970s Fashion changed dramatically from the beginning to the end. If you compare in terms of decades, you can realize that the "early 70s "were “late 60s” and the late 70s were very “early 80s.”In the early 70s, styles were very flashy with extreme bright colors, flowing skirts and pants. It was common for almost every woman to wear wide-flare pants. Suede plays an important role in the ‘70s style too with patchwork or fringe details. Another trend was, suits. Women’s fashion in the mid-to-late 70s was dominated by suits. Women were wearing business suits with pants for work, they were wearing jeans at home and leisure suits, pant suits, jump suits and track suits were worn for everyday at everywhere. Dresses, blouses, hats and skirts were also popular but not that popular for everyday anymore. In other words, ‘70s fashion was all about freedom, a variety of colors and a tendency to mix and match different styles with each other. It’s the period when the subcultures of hippies, punks, folk, gypsy, ethnic, retro, classic, and bohemian chic style followers increased. 70s fashion was the most different and high-spirited time in the history of fashion. Twiggy, Jane Birkin and Diane Von Furstenberg were some of decade’s fashion icons.

80s fashion was based on bright neon colors, mini skirts combined with leggings, fingerless gloves, shoulder pads, exercise clothes, sprayed and high voluminous hair to the skies. 80s party look reflected the main style of the decade. While mini skirts were popular first in the 60s, they came back also in the 80s combined with legwarmers or leggings. While the 1960s mini was usually a dress paired with boots, the 1980s mini was often made of tight, that contained spandex or was made in jeans. Aerobic exercise was very popular in the eighties; headbands, tights, leggings and leg warmers. Women decide to use these accessories not only in the gym but also in their everyday look. They started to combine leg warmers with jeans, mini skirts and tights. Tops, skirts and jewelry were designed in very bright or in other words; neon colors such as neon greens, yellows, pinks and blues. Some makeup lines even designed cosmetics in these very bright colors to match the clothes. It is possible to say neon colors ruled 80s ...Madonna, Jane Fonda Brooke Shields, Demi Moore and Kim Basenger were some of decade’s fashion icons

90s fashion was very different. Anything reflecting 80s became bad. Hair spray and voluminous hair was eighties. Too much makeup and bright flashy colors were eighties. Neon clothing was eighties. Anything eighties was considered bad and most women didn’t want that look in 90s. It can be defined as a return to minimalist fashion. In the early 1990s, fashion remained more stylish as a result of late 80s. However, the popularity of grunge and rock music made grunge look trend more popular by 1994. Grunge fashion trend included ripped and faded jeans, flannel shirts or wool Pendleton layered over dirty T-shirts with outdated logos, and black combat-style boots such as Dr. Martens, comfortable, dirty, and messy. Another popular trend of the decade was the casual chic look with, jeans, hoodies, and sneakers, a trend that continued also in 2000s. Fashion in 90s was also influenced from styles of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. As a result of increased availability of the Internet and satellite TV, fashion was more globalize and homogeneous. As the decade progressed, fashion became more similar to what you saw throughout the 2000s. The grunge look faded away and sexy, glamorous look came back. Tight and sexy clothing was worn again and glamour was back in the fashion world. Throughout the 90s,supermodels dominated the fashion world as decades fashion icons. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzegovina and Kate Moss were some of the most important.
